Product strategy + UX design

Sr. UX Designer at UX Horizons for Embodied Media Systems at Whistlr.io

Share your contact information with new acquaintances, colleagues at a conference, or the person you just met at the coffeeshop – through the power of sound!

I was hired by a long-time collaborator to design an app for iPhone which allows users to share their contact information through a new data protocol that uses sound.

I was the sole UX and UI designer for this product.

My first instinct was to showcase the brand experience of what sounded like a friendly robot whistling. I wanted the brand of Whistlr to be personification of both a whistle and a robot. My sketches led me to create an icon I called the “rockabilly whistle-bot”. The circular body of the whistle serves as a round head, the mouthpiece serves as a high-bang cowlick similar to Archie or other 50s-era rockabilly-styled haircuts, and the lanyard loop is positioned as the ear of the icon. Demonstrating that sound is produced and heard in packets is represented by three squares, whether the app is in listening or whistling mode.

The rest of the app is very simple to ensure ease of use to the users. A blue-black gradient background is strong and comforting, while simple instructions appear below the icon.

We instituted a security check of three numbers to ensure that no unwanted users eavesdrop on a user’s whistling of their contact information.

I also produced the marketing image of a group of users sending their contact information at a social event. We were a team of three that produced this app. It is available on the iTunes store.
